Spider-Man Meets RDJ's Doctor Doom

Okay. Deep breath. I make jokes for a living — it's basically my entire personality and legal defense — but the Avengers: Doomsday trailer landed one image on me that I genuinely couldn't laugh at for a solid ten seconds. Robert Downey Jr. Doctor Doom. Which means the big bad of the whole finale is walking around wearing the exact face of Tony Stark. And somewhere in that movie is a grieving kid from Queens who is NOT ready for that.

Grab a tissue. We're gonna talk about Spider-Man, and then I'll say something dumb to make us both feel better. Deal?

Why RDJ as Doctor Doom absolutely wrecks Spider-Man

Quick refresher for anyone who blocked out the sad parts. Tony Stark — RDJ, Iron Man — was Peter Parker's mentor. His sponsor. His weird, sarcastic, billionaire father figure. He built Peter suits, he yelled at Peter, he believed in Peter, and then in Avengers: Endgame he snapped half the universe back into existence and DIED doing it. Peter's last words to him were 'I don't feel so good' — no wait, that was earlier, and honestly that one's arguably worse.

Peter never fully got over it. Spider-Man: Far From Home was basically two hours of a teenager trying to fill shoes the size of a Sokovia crater. So now imagine you're that kid. You've finally, sort of, maybe started to heal. And the single most dangerous being in the multiverse turns around and he has your dead mentor's FACE. That's not a boss fight. That's a haunting.

Wait — does Peter even remember Tony?

Here's the part that makes it extra spicy, and the part most hot-takes skip. At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange cast a spell that made the ENTIRE WORLD forget Peter Parker exists. Everybody forgot HIM. But Peter? Peter still remembers everybody. He remembers MJ, he remembers Ned, and yeah — he remembers Tony.

So he's carrying all of it, alone, as a total nobody. No Avengers on speed-dial, no Happy Hogan, no funding, no backup. Just a broke kid in a homemade suit and a mountain of grief nobody else even knows he has. THAT is the Spider-Man who's gonna look up and see Doctor Doom wearing Tony Stark's cheekbones. Marvel, why are you like this. (Keep going, I'm obsessed.)

That photo is me gently reading Peter the group chat. 'Hey buddy. So. About the new Avengers movie. You might wanna sit down for the casting.'

How will Spider-Man react to Doctor Doom? My prediction

I've watched enough Peter Parkers cry in enough rain to call this one. Here's my beat-by-beat guess for the moment Spidey clocks that face:

Step one: the freeze. That full-body lock-up where the eyes on the mask go wide (yeah, they emote, it's a whole thing). He thinks, for half a second, that Tony's back.

Step two: the false hope. He says the name. Quiet. 'Mr. Stark?' And it lands like a knife because Doom does NOT answer the way Tony would.

Step three: the horror. Doom uses that face and that voice to be cruel, because that's the whole villain move — Doom weaponizes what you love. Peter realizes the man he'd give anything to get back is now the thing trying to end everything.

Step four: the choice. And THIS is why Spider-Man matters — the kid has to throw a punch at a face he's been dreaming about for years. That's the most Spider-Man thing in the universe: doing the right thing even when it costs you the exact piece of your heart you can't afford to lose.

And that's when I show up. Because a Spider-Man having the worst day of his life is legally, morally, and comedically MY department. Somebody's gotta crack a joke at the funeral, kid. Might as well be the guy who can't die.

Spider-Man in Avengers: Doomsday FAQ

Is Robert Downey Jr. really playing Doctor Doom?

Yes. RDJ — the MCU's original Tony Stark / Iron Man — is Doctor Doom, the main villain of Avengers: Doomsday (in theaters December 18, 2026). He was first teased in the Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene.

Why is it a big deal that Doctor Doom has Tony Stark's face?

Because Tony Stark was Peter Parker's mentor and father figure, and he died in Avengers: Endgame. Casting the same actor as the villain means Spider-Man — and the audience — has to face a big bad who looks exactly like the hero they lost. It's an emotional gut-punch, not just a fun stunt-cast.

Does Spider-Man remember Tony Stark after No Way Home?

Yes. The spell at the end of No Way Home made the world forget Peter Parker — but Peter still remembers everyone, including Tony. So he carries all his grief for Tony into any Doomsday reunion, with none of his old support system left.

Is Tom Holland confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday?

Marvel has been cagey about the full hero lineup and is saving reveals for events like Comic-Con's Hall H, so treat any specific hero list as unconfirmed until Marvel says so. But a movie built on colliding universes with RDJ's Doom at the center is exactly the kind of stage Spider-Man exists to walk onto.
