Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Breakdown
July 20, 2026

I've now watched the Avengers: Doomsday trailer roughly one thousand times, my snacks are gone, my neighbors have filed a noise complaint about the screaming, and I regret NOTHING. This thing goes so hard it should be illegal in at least three states. So grab a chimichanga, because your friendly neighborhood Merc is breaking down the three moments that made me levitate off my couch.
Trailer's on YouTube. Go watch it, then come back and let me ruin it with commentary. I'll wait. ...Okay you're back, let's GO.
Gambit vs. Shang-Chi opens the whole thing
They open the Doomsday trailer with GAMBIT fighting SHANG-CHI. Let me say that again for the people in the cheap seats: they gave the cold open — the single most important ten seconds of any trailer — to Remy LeBeau. My ragin' Cajun. The man who waited THIRTY YEARS and one cancelled movie to get on a real screen, finally throwing charged-up cards at Shang-Chi and the literal power of the Ten Rings.
And it's a gorgeous matchup. Shang-Chi is all flow and close-quarters kung fu and those glowing ancient rings; Gambit is kinetic energy, staff work, and enough Louisiana swagger to season a gumbo. Two guys who both got the short end of the Hollywood stick for years, headlining the opening frame of the biggest crossover ever made. I am not crying. YOU'RE crying. (Okay we're both crying, it's fine, we contain multitudes.)
Gambit making a name for himself in the first ten seconds is the redemption arc I didn't know my little black heart needed. Get it, mon ami.
Mystique finally shows up in the comic-accurate white suit

Next thing that made me gasp like a Victorian child: Mystique. Blue skin, RED hair, and — hold onto your popcorn — the WHITE suit. The comic-accurate one. With the shoulder skulls. THE outfit.
If you only know movie Mystique, you've only ever seen her running around in essentially bright-blue nothing — no costume, just scales and vibes, for like six films. Comic Mystique has always rocked that iconic white dress with the skull-clasp belt and the high collar, and we have NEVER gotten it on the big screen. Until now. Somebody in that costume department finally read a comic and I would like to buy them a drink. This is the kind of fan-service that costs nothing and means everything.
Doctor Doom stops Stormbreaker with two fingers
And then. AND THEN. The moment that broke the internet and my will to be normal about this movie: Thor comes flying in, full Point-Break rage, and hurls Stormbreaker — the axe that once cleaved through Thanos like a rotisserie chicken — straight at Doctor Doom.
Doom stops it. With two fingers. And throws up a PEACE SIGN.

No dodge. No shield. No dramatic clash of sparks. RDJ's Doom just casually catches the most powerful weapon in Asgardian history between two fingers like he's plucking a fry off your plate, and then flips the peace sign like 'good talk, blondie.' That is the most terrifying flex in the entire Multiverse Saga. You don't show a villain no-selling Stormbreaker unless you want the whole theater to quietly whisper 'oh no.'
Now we know why Thor was crying
Remember all that chatter about Thor looking absolutely devastated — the crying-Thor stuff everyone was posting? Yeah. This is why. It's not a random sad beat. Thor is the guy who's punched gods, eaten defeats, and always, ALWAYS gets back up swinging. And Doomsday is showing us the one thing Thor has finally run into that he cannot beat. He threw his best shot — his soul-forged, Thanos-slaying axe — and Doom caught it like a coupon.
Thor's tears aren't weakness. They're recognition. He knows. He looked into those glowing green eyes and did the math and the math said 'you lose.' When the God of Thunder is crying because of your villain, congratulations, you've built a real one. RDJ, you magnificent metal menace.
That's my top three, but the whole trailer is stuffed with this stuff. December 18, 2026 cannot come fast enough, and I say that as a man who is technically immortal and has all the time in the world.
Avengers: Doomsday Trailer FAQ
What happens in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer?
The trailer opens with Gambit fighting Shang-Chi, reveals a comic-accurate white-suit Mystique, and builds to Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) stopping Thor's Stormbreaker with two fingers — a huge power-scaling moment ahead of the film's December 18, 2026 release.
Is Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday?
The trailer opens on Gambit trading blows with Shang-Chi, giving the ragin' Cajun a marquee moment after decades of stop-start attempts to get the character to the big screen. Treat exact roles as unconfirmed until Marvel's official word, but he's front and center in the footage.
Why is Mystique wearing a white suit in Avengers: Doomsday?
Because it's the comic-accurate look. In the comics Mystique's signature outfit is a white dress/bodysuit with a high collar and skull details — something the X-Men movies never adapted, always going with a plain blue look instead. Doomsday finally puts the classic white suit on screen.
How does Doctor Doom stop Stormbreaker?
In the trailer, Doom catches Thor's thrown Stormbreaker with two fingers without flinching and throws up a peace sign — signaling that RDJ's Doom vastly outclasses even Thor, and hinting at why Thor looks so devastated in other shots.
