Ryan Reynolds Says Deadpool Is a Supporting Character Now. He Might Be Right.

Somebody sent me a slideshow this morning with my own face on it and the words SUPPORTING ROLE in letters big enough to see from orbit. Which is a bold way to find out you have been benched by your own actor.

So let's do what nobody who shared that slideshow did, and actually check it.

What Ryan actually said, word for word

Asked about my future, Reynolds said this: "I have some stuff kind of written, but I don't think I am ever going to center him again." Then he kept going, which is the part that got chopped off: "He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group."

That is the whole thing. Two sentences on Sunday Today. No announcement, no studio press release, no cast list. A man on a morning show being honest about a character he has played for a decade.

And it tracks with something he said back in December 2024, when he called a fourth solo outing "iterative and redundant." Which is a very expensive way of saying we have already done this three times and the bit is getting old. Rude. Accurate. But rude.

Your feed is five months behind

Here is the part that made me laugh. That quote is from April 2026. Variety, Deadline and half the internet covered it the same week. It is not news. It is a rerun.

Somebody rebuilt it into a fresh carousel, the algorithm went ooh shiny, and now it is circling your timeline in September wearing a fake mustache. This happens constantly with Marvel news. An old quote gets a new font and suddenly everyone is arguing about it again like it happened at breakfast.

And the headline got it backwards

The slide said "Deadpool 4 will have Deadpool in a supporting role." Reynolds never said that. He never connected the words supporting character to a Deadpool 4 at all.

If anything he said the opposite. A movie called Deadpool 4 where Deadpool is a supporting character is not a Deadpool 4. That is just a film I wander through. The headline took a guy saying he does not want to lead and turned it into a guy announcing what he is leading. Those are different sentences with very different feelings attached.

The two quotes that are arguing with each other

Now line it up properly, because the order matters and nobody ever does this. April 2026: he does not think he will ever center me again. July 2026, on stage at Fanatics Fest in New York: "There's eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It's going to be great." I wrote about that one when it happened — the day Reynolds confirmed another movie is coming.

Put them together and the picture is actually clear, just not the one anybody wants. Another Deadpool movie is coming. No writer. No director. No date. And the man playing me does not think I should be the one carrying it.

Those two things do not cancel out. They just make a shape people find uncomfortable, so the internet picks whichever half suits its mood that week.

The part where I agree with him, which is upsetting

I have thought about this for a full twenty minutes, which for me is basically a sabbatical, and here is where I landed. He is right.

I am not a main course. I am a condiment. I am incredible on top of something else and genuinely upsetting by myself with a spoon. Put me next to a man with claws and a bad attitude and I am the funniest thing you have ever seen. Put me alone in a room for two hours and you are watching a guy narrate his own scenes because nobody else will.

Every single one of my best moments happened because somebody else was standing there refusing to laugh. That is the whole act. I need a straight man the way a match needs a wall.

So no, I am not offended. I am a supporting character. I just would have preferred to find that out somewhere other than a slideshow with my own face on it.

What would actually settle this

One thing, and it arrives in December. If I turn up in Avengers: Doomsday as part of an ensemble — not headlining, just in the mix causing problems — then everything he said in April was him telling you the plan out loud and you calling it bad news. In that same April interview he was asked about Doomsday and stayed carefully vague, saying he had never "stepped foot on set." Which is a sentence with a lot of doors left open in it. I went through the rest of that evidence when a prototype of my suit turned up at auction, and my verdict has not moved.

Until then: a casting announcement, a trailer, or an actual credit. Not a repost. Not a carousel. Not a man on Threads with a font.

Quick answers

Did Ryan Reynolds quit Deadpool?

No. He said he has material written and that another film is coming. He said he does not want to be the centre of it. Those are very different from walking away, and nobody has suggested recasting.

When did he actually say Deadpool is a supporting character?

April 2026, in a Sunday Today interview, reported that week by Variety, Deadline and others. If you saw it in September, you saw a repost.

So is a new Deadpool movie still happening?

Yes, per Reynolds himself in July 2026. What does not exist yet is a writer, a director, a title or a release date. Anyone posting a date is guessing.

Does supporting character mean Avengers: Doomsday?

It is the obvious guess and it is still a guess. Marvel has not confirmed Deadpool for Doomsday, and Reynolds has publicly downplayed it. An ensemble film is exactly the shape he described, which is why everyone jumped — but wanting something to connect is not the same as it connecting.

Meanwhile, I am available and I do not need a script

Hollywood can take its time deciding how much of me the public can handle. I am already booked into the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex doing birthday parties, grand openings, conventions, corporate events and charity gigs, where I am the lead, the supporting cast and the guy raiding your snack table. No development hell. No release window. Book me before I book myself.
